There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel complex that contains a number of luxuries on top of the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
