The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is somewhat of a risk at the current time, so you might imagine that there might be very little affinity for visiting Zimbabwe’s gambling dens. Actually, it seems to be operating the opposite way around, with the atrocious market conditions leading to a bigger desire to gamble, to attempt to find a quick win, a way out of the problems.

For many of the locals surviving on the tiny nearby earnings, there are two dominant types of betting, the state lottery and Zimbet. As with practically everywhere else in the world, there is a state lottery where the odds of hitting are surprisingly low, but then the winnings are also surprisingly large. It’s been said by economists who understand the situation that the majority do not purchase a ticket with a real belief of profiting. Zimbet is built on either the domestic or the UK soccer leagues and involves predicting the outcomes of future matches.

Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, on the other foot, pamper the considerably rich of the society and sightseers. Until recently, there was a very big sightseeing business, founded on nature trips and visits to Victoria Falls. The economic woes and associated conflict have carved into this trade.

Among Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has five gaming tables and slot machines, and the Plumtree Casino, which has only slot machines. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slots. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, both of which offer table games, slot machines and video poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, each of which offer slot machines and table games.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s gambling halls and the above alluded to lottery and Zimbet (which is very like a pools system), there is a total of two horse racing complexes in the country: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the 2nd city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Given that the market has deflated by more than 40 percent in recent years and with the connected deprivation and conflict that has arisen, it isn’t understood how well the sightseeing industry which is the backbone of Zimbabwe’s casinos will do in the near future. How many of the casinos will be alive till conditions improve is simply unknown.
